As most of you know I was blessed to
be able to go home to Austin last weekend for Michael and Allison’s wedding (If
you don’t know them, they are some amazing friends of mine from college). It
was great to see so many people and if I didn’t get to see you, I’m sorry!
Coming back to Mexico I knew I would have to dive into this crazy life in the
middle of the week. And this was by far our most difficult yet God filled week.
Our theme was simplicity but how is
simplicity taught?? That’s the question that faced our leaders. As many of them
struggled with this question they decided that the best thing to do would be to
look through the scriptures and follow Jesus’ example, get back to the basics…easier
said than done. Each morning we awoke, sometimes as early at 5:15, to do what
Jesus did, find a solitary place and pray to our Father. A few mornings that
meant going into Matamoros and sitting in a park around a small lake. It was
glorious to have this time to sort out things with the Lord and seek His input
for the day. Wednesday morning we
followed the example of Jesus in feeding people. We bought food, spent most of
the early afternoon preparing it and then visiting with our families. That
night we went out and just asked the Lord where he wanted us. As the Holy Spirit
began to move in each of us, my group was led to a city plaza. We met many people
that night in the span of about 3 hours, but what stood out to me was that
almost every person that I personally met, we were able to pray with. I have found that at times there is such a
freedom in not being of the culture you are ministering to.
Friday, we followed Jesus’ example of
working. Jesus worked with his hands as a carpenter, so we would also. My team
along with Uganda 2, and South Africa went to work on the floor of a house.
Some dirt had been delivered to the street corner and had to be moved one shovel
full and wheel barrow load at a time to make the ground of this house. Two
rooms both estimated to be about 12 x 18 feet, had to be filled with 2 feet of
dirt. That’s a lot of shoveling that took us all morning but we got be the
hands and feet of Christ to a beautiful mother and her 3 year old daughter, Genesis.
For those of you wanting to know what
to pray about…Many of us are getting sick with an upper respiratory sickness
and in a tight knit community it’s difficult not to spread germs. We are doing
an outreach in a few weeks that the individual teams are planning and we will
be doing without leaders so we could all use prayers for direction and guidance
on what to do for that week. And we can always use prayers for unity and
safety. Thank you all! God bless!
